Catholic Church Records of the Pacific Northwest

The Catholic Church Records of the Pacific Northwest were abstracted by Harriet Duncan Munnick from the original Church Sacramental registers with collaboration on the first and second books by Mikell Delores Warner; on book six by Stephen Dow Beckman, Phd; and on the last book by Adrian R. Munnick, Harriet's son.

Book One, completed in 1979 includes:
Vancouver Records Vol I 1838-1844

Stellamaris Mission 1848-1860

Book Two, completed in 1979 includes:
St. Paul Book Vol I 1839-1848
St. Paul Book Vol II 1847-1864
St. Paul Book Vol III 1865-1898

Book Three, completed in 1982 includes:
St. Louis Reg Vol I 1845-1868
St. Louis Reg Vol II 1869-1900

Book Four, completed in 1984 includes:

Book Seven, completed in 1989 includes:
Missions St. Ann/St. Rose Part I 1847-1888
Mission St. Ann Reg II 1865-1888
Walla Walla/Frenchtown Reg II 1859-1872
Walla Walla/Frenchtown Reg III 1872-1880
Missions Frenchtown/ St. Rose 1876-1888

Each book was individually indexed. Sharon Osborn-Ryan took on the task on compiling cumulative indexes for the baptisms, deaths and marriages.

The Registers of the Catholic Church are in the Church archives in Portland. Due to current financial constrains the registers are not available. The above volumes are the only source I know of to obtain information on the Catholic Sacraments in the Northwest.

The early extractions included signaficant details. The suppliments give minimal information.

Unfortunately, these books do not include information on The Dalles. Jacob and Lena went to The Dalles in the early 1890's. Clement and Mary Ann stayed in the Portland area and there are a few entries about their family.

I did not find entries in the Baptism or Marriage Indexes.

From Cumulative Death Index to the Catholic Church Records of the Pacific Northwest.
Date of death is used if available, otherwise the date is the burial date.

Hello. I just thought I'd provide an additional resource to your post. The Mantle of Elias by M. Leona Nichols, 1941, was the first English translated and published of these early NW Catholic records. To my understanding, Harriet Munnick used this to help decipher the original French texts. Though it is not in print, copies can be found. I found a signed copy from Arthur H. Clark Co., Spokane, Washington for only $35.

Warm regards~
